2025 CT Minor Lecture: The Rock Band History with KBS PD Il Seo Jung

On November 7th, KAIST Graduate School of Culture and Technology (GSCT) hosted the <2025 CT Minor: Special Lecture & Meeting> as part of its CT Minor program for undergraduate students. Under the guidance of Professor Kim, the director of this program, the event featured a special lecture, providing an invaluable opportunity for AIRIS lab members to participate in the session.

Producer Il Seo Jung, who served as the director at KBS Radio, delivered a special lecture titled “The Rock Band History: 록 음악사의 중요 앨범들 (The Rock Band History)”.

PD Jung has directed major music programs for over 25 years, including 황정민의 FM대행진 (Hwang Jung-min’s FM Dahaengjin), 김광한의 골든팝스 (Kim Gwang-han’s Golden Pops), 신화 이민우의 자유선언 (SHINHWA Lee Min-woo’s Declaration of Freedom), 팝스갤러리 (Pops Gallery), 레코드마니아 (Record Mania), and 유희열의 라디오천국 (Yoo Hee-yeol’s Radio Paradise). He has also authored several books including 365일 팝음악사 (365 Days of Pop Music History), 그시절, 우리들의 팝송 (Those Days, Our Pop Songs), and 더 밴드 (The Band), documenting popular music history from diverse perspectives. As both an enthusiast and industry professional, PD Jung has provided essential guidance on popular music to a wide audience.

The lecture traced the evolution of popular music from its origins in blues and jazz, through the pioneers of rock and roll such as Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, and Elvis Presley, to the Beatles as the pinnacle of band music, and finally to the diversification of rock into folk rock, progressive rock, and hard rock. Through this presentation, students gained insights not only into the musical and cultural transformation of the rock genre but also into the organic relationship between social trends and popular arts.

Beyond information alone, the lecture provided students with an opportunity to understand and interpret popular arts through the lens of macroscopic historical flows encompassing society and culture, further inspiring new perspectives and visions for future culture technology.
