Gugak Music Recording for Aural Heritage

In mid-July, the Aural Heritage team, (Kyung Taek Oh, Rai Sato, and Sungjoon Kim), invited professional musicians to record music content for the Aural Heritage project.

The Aural Heritage project aims to capture the unique acoustic characteristics of historical buildings/environments and combine these with 3D models created through 3D scanning. This allows us to recreate the original sound experience in virtual reality (VR).

This time, we focused on recording traditional Korean gugak music to be used in a VR simulation of a traditional Korean house we had previously scanned and measured. To ensure the purity of the instrument sounds without any external reverberation, the recording was conducted in the anechoic chamber at the Electrical Engineering Department of KAIST.

Moving forward, we will integrate these recorded sounds into the VR environment and conduct experiments to evaluate the digital recreation of these acoustic heritages.
