International Workshop of Music Perception with Cochlear Implants 2025

On Tuesday, November 18th, the AIRIS Lab and the Smart Sound Lab successfully co-hosted an international workshop titled <Music Perception with Cochlear Implants> at the LG Innovation Hall, KAIST.

This workshop was organized to deeply explore the auditory perception experiences of Cochlear Implant (CI) users. We were honored to invite Dr. William L. Martens from Mcquire University in Australia, as the keynote speaker. Dr. Martens delivered an insightful lecture by bridging his professional expertise in psychoacoustics with his unique personal perspective as a cochlear implant recipient.

Key topics discussed during the seminar included:

  • INDSCAL timbre-space analysis utilizing trained listeners and controlled orchestral instrument stimuli.
  • A comparative look at how “electric” hearing and “acoustic” hearing differentially shape the perception of musical timbre.

By bridging the gap between engineering and perceptual psychology, this joint workshop provided a vital platform for discussing the future of audio research. We look forward to applying these insights to develop more inclusive audio technologies that enhance the listening experience for all users.
