AIRIS lab students Gangeun Lee, Eden Park and Minjae Kim, attended an audio seminar hosted by Newjak XR Studio, on August 17, 2023 at DMC Hi-tech Business center (DMC첨단산업센터).
The lecture and performance was presented by Sanggyu Park (박상규 대표), representative of Al gruppe. Students were able to learn about fundamentals and basics of sound, and an introduction to immersive audio technology with its applications, such as:
- Basics for sound localization
- HRTF and its measurement
- Binaural, Multi channel recording
- Production / Reproduction for Dolby Atmos
The lecture also focused on how should we produce realistic audio in Unity / Unreal virtual environments. IR Database such as OpenAIR were recommended to introduce spatial characteristics to an audio, with explanation of how convolutional reverb works.
After the lecture, seminar participants were able to experience immersive sound examples through 8 above-head speakers in a separate studio. The software used was SPAT Revolution, which was developed by an audio software company named FLUX::. It was able to compare different panning algorithms and check how the experience changes as we move away from / toward the sweetspot.
A short Q&A session followed the performance, finishing the seminar. Representative Sanggyu Park shared his experience of collaboration with professional yogis, providing immersive seasonal soundscapes to participants.
He also emphasized importance of the incorporation with visual cues for certain sound localization situations, such as when an object has trajectory within our median plane, which is difficult to solely rely on sound. His priceless lecture and performance helped our students to understand what is immersive sound.
